Key Ingredients

See the recipe card at the bottom of the post for a full list of ingredients and their exact amounts.

A wood surface with all the ingredients placed on it to make homemade blueberry buttercream frosting.
  • Blueberries: They create the blueberry sauce, which gives the frosting its fresh, fruity flavor and pretty purple-blue color.
  • Lemon Juice: Brightens the blueberry flavor and keeps the frosting from tasting overly sweet or heavy.
  • Butter: The base of the buttercream, making it rich, creamy, and fluffy.
  • Powdered Sugar: Sweetens and thickens the frosting, making it smooth, pipeable, and able to hold its shape.

Variations

  • Lemon Blueberry Buttercream: Add a teaspoon of lemon zest for a brighter citrus flavor that pairs perfectly with the blueberries.
  • Swap out the Berries: Any of your favorite berries work for this frosting. You can even use a mix for mixed berry frosting.
  • Blueberry Cream Cheese Frosting: Replace part of the butter with cream cheese for a tangier frosting that’s perfect on cupcakes and mini cinnamon rolls.
  • Dark Chocolate Blueberry Frosting: Spread this frosting over my chocolate zucchini cake or chocolaty brownies for a rich chocolate-berry combination.

Step 4: Frost cookies, cakes, cupcakes, brownies, or cinnamon rolls and enjoy!

Expert Tips

  • Let the blueberry sauce cool completely before mixing it into the frosting.
  • Use room temperature butter for the smoothest texture.
  • Beat the butter until light and fluffy before adding sugar.
  • If the frosting is too soft, chill it for 15-20 minutes before piping.

Blueberry Buttercream Frosting FAQs

Can I use frozen blueberries for blueberry sauce?

Yes, you can! Frozen blueberries work just as well as fresh ones for blueberry sauce. You may just need to cook it for a few extra minutes.

Can I make buttercream frosting ahead of time?

Absolutely. Buttercream frosting stores very well in the refrigerator. Just make it in advance and refrigerate until you’re ready to use it.

Why was my blueberry buttercream frosting thin?

If your blueberry sauce isn’t fully cooled, the warmth will make the buttercream frosting thin and runny.

How long is blueberry buttercream frosting good for?

You can refrigerate this frosting for up to 5 days in an airtight container or freeze it for longer storage.

Can I freeze buttercream frosting?

Absolutely! It will keep well for up to 2 months in an airtight, freezer-safe container.

How do I use frozen buttercream frosting?

To use your frozen buttercream frosting, thaw it at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Then, beat it again until smooth and creamy.
