Key Ingredients

You’ll find all the ingredients and their exact amounts in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

A wood surface with all the ingredients placed on it to make honey lime grilled chicken.
  • Chicken Breasts: They’re the main protein and the base of the dish, absorbing all the marinade flavors.
  • Honey: Adds sweetness and helps create caramelization when cooked, balancing the spices.
  • Lime Juice: Provides acidity that tenderizes the chicken and brightens the overall flavor.
  • Vegetable Oil: Helps carry the marinade flavors and keeps the chicken moist during cooking.
  • Garlic, Onion, Paprika, Chili Powder, Cumin, Cayenne, Oregano, and Pepper: Defines the bold, savory, slightly smoky and spicy flavor profile of the dish.

Variations

  • Make It Spicier: Add extra cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce to the marinade.
  • Use Chicken Thighs: Chicken thighs are juicier and work great on the grill.
  • Add a Smoke: Use mild smoking woods like apple or cherry to add more flavor.
  • Bake Instead of Grill: Add the chicken and some veggies to a baking sheet and bake at 375°F for 25 to 30 minutes for honey lime sheet pan chicken and vegetables.
  • Turn It Into Tacos: Shred the chicken and make grilled chicken tacos.

Step 4: Rest the chicken for 5 minutes and serve with your favorite sides.

Expert Tips

  • Marinate Long Enough: Letting the chicken marinate for at least 4 hours ensures maximum flavor. Overnight is even better.
  • Don’t Overcook: Use a meat thermometer to avoid dry chicken. 165°F is perfect.
  • Let It Rest: Resting allows the juices to redistribute for a more tender bite.
  • Use Fresh Lime Juice: Fresh lime juice gives the best bright, citrusy flavor.
  • Soak Your Wood: If you choose to add wood for a smoky flavor, soak it for at least 30 minutes to ensure it smokes rather than burns.

Honey Lime Grilled Chicken FAQS

How long should I marinate honey lime chicken?

For best results, marinate for at least 4 hours, but overnight will give even more flavor.

Can I cook this chicken on a stovetop?

Yes. Use a grill pan or skillet over medium heat and cook for about 6–7 minutes per side.

Is honey lime grilled chicken spicy?

It has a mild kick from the cayenne and chili powder, but the honey balances the heat.

Can I freeze marinated chicken?

Yes. Place the chicken and marinade in a freezer-safe bag and freeze for up to 2 months.

What’s the best way to tell when chicken is done?

Use a meat thermometer to check the chicken for doneness. 165°F gives you tender, juicy, perfectly cooked chicken.

The honey-lime glaze is seriously addicting. The chicken stayed so juicy on the grill and had that perfect balance of sweet and zesty. I will definitely be adding this to the summer rotation!
