If you love jalapeno poppers, just wait until you try this jalapeno popper dip! It has everything that makes those little appetizers so irresistible: plenty of cheese, smoky bacon, tender jalapeños, and just enough spice to keep things interesting. The best part? You get all that delicious flavor in one warm, creamy dip without having to stuff a single pepper.

A white bowl filled with jalapeno popper dip with jalapenos, bacon, green onions, shredded cheese in the background, and a title overlay at the top.

This cheesy dip starts with cream cheese, sharp cheddar, and sour cream, then gets loaded with crispy bacon, sautéed jalapeños, and fresh green onions. A combination of Slap Ya Mama seasoning, garlic powder, paprika, black pepper, and red pepper flakes gives it a flavorful kick. Once everything is baked until hot and bubbly, a quick stir brings it all together into a rich, creamy dip.

Whether you’re putting together snacks for game day, having friends over, or just want something cheesy to munch on during movie night, this dip is always a good idea. Grab a bag of tortilla chips or your favorite crackers, because once you start dipping, it’s pretty hard to stop!

If you love bold, flavorful party eats like this, be sure to try my street corn dip, smoked cream cheese, or three-alarm cheesy onion monkey bread.

Key Ingredients

You’ll find the full list of ingredients and their exact amounts in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

A rustic wood surface with all the ingredients placed on it to make jalapeno popper dip.
  • Cream cheese & sour cream: Create the rich, creamy base that makes this dip smooth, tangy, and perfect for scooping.
  • Sharp cheddar cheese: Brings that bold, cheesy flavor and melts into all the other ingredients for a delicious, gooey dip.
  • Bacon: Adds a smoky, salty crunch that makes every bite even more flavorful.
  • Jalapenos: Bring a fresh peppery flavor and a little heat, especially after being cooked until tender and slightly roasted.
  • Green onions: Add a fresh, mild onion flavor that balances out all the rich, cheesy goodness.
  • Slap Ya Mama, black pepper, garlic powder, paprika & red pepper flakes: Give the dip its bold, savory flavor with a little extra kick and a touch of smoky warmth.

Variations

  • Make it milder: Remove the seeds and membranes from the jalapeños and leave out the red pepper flakes.
  • Turn up the heat: Keep some of the jalapeño seeds or add an extra pepper if you really enjoy spicy appetizers.
  • Try pepper jack cheese: Replace some of the sharp cheddar with shredded pepper jack for an extra cheesy dip with more heat.
  • Add a crunchy topping: Sprinkle crushed buttery crackers or seasoned breadcrumbs over the dip before baking for a little crunch.
  • Use smoked paprika: Swap regular paprika for smoked paprika to bring out even more of that smoky bacon flavor.
  • Add extra bacon: Sprinkle a little additional crispy bacon over the top just before serving.

Step 4: Mix everything until combined, top with additional green onions, if desired, and enjoy!

Expert Tips

  • Soften the cream cheese if needed: Room-temperature cream cheese will mix more easily after baking. If it’s straight from the refrigerator, cutting it into small cubes helps it warm through faster.
  • Cook the bacon until crispy: Crispy bacon adds the best texture and holds up better when mixed with the creamy cheese.
  • Adjust the jalapeño heat: Most of the heat is concentrated in the white membranes inside the peppers. Remove them for a milder dip or leave some in for more spice.
  • Sauté the peppers first: That quick skillet step makes a difference in both flavor and texture, so don’t skip it.
  • Shred your own cheddar: Freshly shredded cheese generally melts more smoothly than packaged shredded cheese.
  • Don’t overbake: The dip only needs enough time for the cheese to melt and everything to heat through.

Jalapeno Popper Dip FAQs

Is jalapeno popper dip spicy?

Jalapeño popper dip has a mild to moderate kick from the fresh jalapeños, Slap Ya Mama seasoning, and red pepper flakes. To make it milder, remove the seeds and white membranes from the jalapeños and leave out the red pepper flakes. For more heat, keep some of the seeds or add an extra jalapeño.

Can I make jalapeno popper dip ahead of time?

Yes! Assemble the dip in the baking dish, cover it tightly, and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours before baking. Once you’re ready to serve, bake it at 325°F until the cheese is melted and the dip is hot throughout. If it’s going into the oven cold, it may need a little extra baking time.

Do I need to cook the jalapeños before adding them to the dip?

Sautéing the jalapeños before baking is recommended because it softens the peppers and brings out their flavor. This helps prevent crunchy pieces of jalapeño in the creamy dip. A quick sauté also gives the peppers a slightly roasted taste that pairs well with the bacon and cheese.

Can I use pickled jalapeños instead of fresh?

Yes, pickled jalapeños are a convenient substitute for fresh peppers. They add a tangier flavor and may have a different level of heat. Drain them well before adding them to the dip so excess liquid doesn’t make the mixture thinner.

How do I make jalapeno popper dip less spicy?

Remove the seeds and white membranes from the fresh jalapeños before dicing them, and skip the red pepper flakes. You can also use fewer jalapeños if you prefer a very mild dip. The cream cheese, cheddar, and sour cream still provide plenty of rich, tangy flavor.

What cheese works best for jalapeno popper dip?

Sharp cheddar is a great choice because it adds a bold, savory cheese flavor. Monterey Jack makes a delicious substitute, while pepper jack adds extra spice. You can also combine cheddar with Monterey Jack for a balance of flavor and meltiness. Shredding cheese from a block can help it melt more smoothly.

Why is my jalapeno popper dip too thick?

Cream cheese creates a naturally thick, scoopable dip, and the mixture will become thicker as it cools. Stir it well while it’s still hot to help the ingredients blend together. If it needs loosening, add a small splash of milk or a spoonful of sour cream and stir until creamy.

Why is my jalapeno popper dip greasy or separated?

Cheese dips can become greasy or separate when they are overheated. Bake the dip only until the cheese is melted and bubbly, then remove it from the oven and stir everything together while it’s hot. If reheating leftovers, use gentle heat and stir occasionally to help restore a smooth consistency.

Can I make jalapeno popper dip in a slow cooker?

Yes, you can adapt the dip for a slow cooker. Combine the cream cheese, cheddar, sour cream, cooked bacon, sautéed jalapeños, green onions, and seasonings, then heat on low until the cheese is melted and the dip is hot. Stir occasionally to help everything blend smoothly. Slow cookers vary, so check the dip regularly and avoid overheating it.

How should I store leftover jalapeno popper dip?

Let the dip cool slightly, transfer it to an airtight container, and refrigerate it within 2 hours of cooking. Store it in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. The dip may firm up as it chills, but gentle reheating and a good stir will help bring back its creamy texture.

How do I reheat jalapeno popper dip?

For the oven, transfer the dip to an oven-safe dish and warm it at 325°F, stirring as needed, until hot throughout. For individual portions, microwave in short intervals, stirring between each one. If the dip seems too thick after reheating, stir in a small spoonful of sour cream. Reheat leftovers to 165°F for food safety.

Can I freeze jalapeno popper dip?

Freezing isn’t recommended because cream cheese and sour cream can separate or become grainy after thawing. For the best texture, enjoy the dip freshly made or refrigerated. I
