Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe

This Monte Cristo Sandwich is absolutely the perfect comfort food whether you are craving it for breakfast, lunch or dinner. A delicious sandwich that is the best combination of buttery golden brown French toast packed with ham, turkey and cheese.

What is a Monte Cristo Sandwich?

A Monte Cristo is a combination of French toast and a delicious deli sandwich. The entire sandwich is dipped into an egg mixture, like French toast, and grilled to perfection. This creates the most amazing combination.

While no one knows exactly where the Monte Cristo sandwich came from, there is no doubt it is not going anywhere. Make it as a ham and cheese, turkey and cheese, with pork or beef, or with any combination you love.

What type of Cheese is Best?

Traditionally, when you make a Monte Cristo, you want to use swiss cheese. However, the best thing about this sandwich is how easy it is to make it the way you love it. You can make this tasty sandwich with American cheese, cheddar cheese or shredded gruyere cheese. Use whatever kind of cheese you enjoy when making this pan fried sandwich recipe.

How to Store Leftover Monte Cristo with Jam

While I rarely have leftover Monte Cristo sandwiches in my house, if you find that you have made more than you can eat at one sitting or you just want to have extra on hand, you will want to store them in the refrigerator. Be sure it is wrapped well in plastic wrap or stored in a plastic bag like a sandwich bag or freezer bag.

How to Reheat These Sandwiches

There are several ways that you can reheat a Monte Cristo.

  • You can reheat it in the microwave. Microwave for about 25 seconds.
  • You can also reheat it on the stove top. Heat it in the skillet with melted butter. Be sure to flip the sandwich half way through.
  • You can also reheat it in the oven at 350 degrees. This will take about 6 minutes.

What is the difference between a croque monsieur and a Monte Cristo

A croque monsieur is a French sandwich that is filled with ham and cheese. It is baked or fried with cheese on top of the bread that, as it melts, forms a crust. A Monte Cristo is usually a ham and cheese sandwich, although it can be made with other meats and then dipped in an egg batter. It is then fried in butter. While these sandwiches are similar, there is a definite difference in taste.
