How to Make Homemade Strawberry Crisp
Making this crisp is just about the easiest thing you’ll ever do. The filling isn’t even cooked, it simply sits until ready to bake.
Step 1: Prep
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and spray a 9×13 baking dish with nonstick spray. Rinse the strawberries, remove their hulls, and cut them in half.
Step 2: Make the Strawberry Filling
Whisk the sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg together. Then combine them with the strawberries and lemon juice in a large bowl. Let sit for at least 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Pour the mixture in the prepared baking dish, then top with sliced butter.
Step 3: Make the Crumble
Whisk the flour, brown sugar, and oats together in a large mixing bowl. Add 1 cup of butter and mix with a pastry cutter until crumbly.
Step 4: Bake
Spread the crisp mixture evenly over the strawberry mixture, then bake uncovered for 45 to 55 minutes or until the topping is golden brown. Serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
Recipe Tips
- Don’t wash your strawberries until you’re ready to use them. Damp berries get moldy easily.
- Let your berries sit for at least 5 minutes coated in sugar so they release their juice and get extra sweet.
- Use cold butter to make the crisp topping for the best texture.
Variations
- Use your favorite berries for this recipe. Any of them will work!
- You can slice up your favorite fruits like apples, pears, and peaches for a different filling for this recipe.
- Add a touch of mace to the spice mix if you like.
What to Serve with Homemade Strawberry Crisp
This delicious crisp is delicious on its own, but it’s even better with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It also makes a great dessert after classic meals like:
- Roasted, baked, or fried chicken
- Pork roast or chops
- Pot roast
- Steak
- Barbecue
