Key Ingredients

- Hot Dogs: I always use all-beef dogs, but your favorite brand will work.
- Cheddar Cheese: Cheddar is a bold cheese that works well with the hot dog’s flavor.
- Corn Tortillas: These get so crispy when you fry them up.
Variations
- Hot Dogs: Any hot dog variety will work in this recipe. Use your favorite.
- Sausage: Use your favorite smoked or summer sausage in place of hot dogs. You can also pre-cook Italian, chorizo, or other varieties and then use them as directed in the recipe.
- Cheese: I love cheddar, but any bold cheese like Cheddar Jack, Colby Jack, Pepper Jack, and the like will work.
How to Make Deep Fried Tortilla Wrapped Cheese Dogs
I’ve included an overview of the recipe here, but you’ll find the exact instructions in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
- Cut each hot dog lengthwise, making sure not to cut all the way through.
- Add a slice of cheddar cheese to the center of each hot dog.
- Wrap the hot dogs in corn tortillas and fry until golden and crispy on all sides.
- Transfer to a plate lined with paper towels as you go. Enjoy when all the dogs are fried!

Tips
- Cutting the Dogs: Cut about ¾ through the hot dogs to create a pocket for the cheese, while leaving them intact.
- Tortillas: Corn tortillas give these dogs the best flavor and most crunch.
- Testing the Oil: Dip the handle of a wooden spoon into your oil. It’s hot enough if you get continuous bubbles around it.
- Don’t Crowd the Pan: The oil needs to remain as hot as possible for even frying, so fry your tortilla dogs in batches.
Deep Fried Tortilla Wrapped Cheese Dogs FAQs
Corn tortillas work best for these cheesy, crispy, fried dogs. Corn tortillas get extra-crispy when fried, and their flavor gives the recipe a taste that’s a little like a corndog.
I prefer all-beef franks. However, you can use any of your favorite varieties. Any hot dog will work. It’s all about the falvor you prefer.
You can. However, it’s important to note that any raw variety should be cooked before wrapping and frying.
