This homemade chicken lo mein is a quick and easy, savory, and absolutely delicious, classic favorite Chinese take-out recipe that you can make at home and tastes even better.

I love Chinese food, and I’ve been ordering takeout for years. I know, I know. It’s hard to believe that a food blogger would actually buy food, but there it is. There’s just something about the flavors of Chinese food that I can’t get enough of. For a long time, I thought I wouldn’t be able to make it at home. All of those flavors just seemed like they’d be too hard to recreate at home. That’s the power of the unknown, I guess because it’s actually quite easy to make various takeout dishes. All of those complex flavors are actually made by combining simple ingredients to create a greater effect.

I’m so glad I decided to try my hand at making my own takeout at home because it led me to one of my favorite recipes – this homemade chicken lo mein. It’s just as delicious as any lo mein you’d get from your local Chinese place, and it’s easy to make. It’s a winner all the way around!

Homemade Chicken Lo Mein

This chicken lo mein is absolutely delicious. Tender white meat chicken and broccoli come together with brown sugar, oyster sauce, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, and more classic Chinese flavors to create a sweet and spicy dish that explodes with flavor. Then, we serve it over a bed of lo mein noodles to create a take-out dish that you can make at home. It’s so easy and so delicious, and the entire family will absolutely love it.

Lo Mein Variations

The great thing about lo mein is that you can so easily switch things up. By just making small changes you can take this recipe and turn it into multiple dishes. It’s so easy to do, and the results are always delicious.

Different Noodles

The classic noodles for this dish are Chinese egg noodles. However, if you don’t have them, you can also use spaghetti noodles. It won’t be exactly the same, but it will be close enough.

Different Meat

Change the meat to create a variety of dishes from chicken lo mein to beef lo mein or even shrimp lo mein and everything in between. Some great meat options include:

Traditionally, nothing is served with lo mein dishes. They’re a complete meal all on their own. If you do want to pair them with something, I recommend a simple side salad or classic takeout options like egg rolls and wontons.

How to Store and Reheat Homemade Chicken Lo Mein

You can store this recipe in the refrigerator in an air-tight container for 3 to 4 days. For longer storage, you can freeze it in an air-tight, freezer-safe container or heavy-duty freezer bags for up to 3 months.

To reheat this dish, heat oil in a pan on medium heat. Then add the chicken lo mein. Toss for 3 to 4 minutes or until the chicken and vegetables are heated through. Be careful not to set the heat too high or stop tossing the dish or you could burn the noodles.

For the Lo Mein Sauce

  • Chicken broth
  • Brown sugar
  • Oyster sauce
  • Soy sauce
  • Hoisin sauce
  • Sesame oil
  • Red pepper flakes
  • Ground ginger
  • Black pepper
  • Cornstarch + water

  • Butter
  • Chicken breasts

  • Onion powder

  • Vegetable oil
  • Onion, diced
  • Red bell pepper, diced
  • Cloves garlic, minced
  • Carrots
  • Cabbage, shredded

How to Make Homemade Chicken Lo Mein

Although there are several ingredients to this recipe, there are only a few simple steps needed to make this delicious recipe.

Step 1: Make the Lo Mein Sauce

In a medium saucepan, stir all sauce ingredients together, and cook over medium-high heat. Then combine the cornstarch and water and add it to the sauce, cooking until it’s thick and bubbly. Set aside.

Step 2: Cook the Chicken

Add butter to a wok and heat over medium heat. Then, add the chicken pieces and seasoning to the wok and cook the chicken until it’s no longer pink. Remove the chicken and set it aside.

Step 3: Cook the Vegetables

In the same wok, add vegetable oil and heat it over medium heat. Then, add the onions, carrots, and red bell pepper and cook until the vegetables are crisp but becoming tender. Then, add the minced garlic, broccoli, and snow peas and cook for 3 to 4 minutes.

Step 4: Cook the Noodles

Cook the noodles per package instructions.

Step 5: Complete the Dish

Add the vegetables and chicken to the wok. Then pour the savory sauce into the wok. Toss all ingredients together and cook for 3 to 4 minutes, then toss in the noodles. Serve and enjoy!

Ingredients
  

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3 chicken breasts
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • 2-3 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup carrots, shredded
  • 1 cup cabbage, shredded
  • 1 cup snow peas
  • 2-3 cups broccoli florets
  • 1 package Lo Mein noodles

For the Sauce:

  • 1¼ cup chicken broth
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup oyster sauce
  • ½ cup soy sauce
  • ¼ cup hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 tablespoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch + 2 tablespoons water

Instructions
 

For the Chicken

  • Add butter to wok and heat over medium heat.
  • Add chicken and seasonings to wok. Cook until the chicken is no longer pink. Remove and set aside.
  • In the same pan, add vegetable oil and heat over medium heat. Add onions, carrots, and red bell pepper. Cook until crisp, but tender.
  • Add minced garlic, broccoli, cabbage, and snow peas and cook for 3-4 minutes.
  • Cook noodles per package directions.
  • Add vegetables back to the pan along with the chicken.

For the Sauce

  • In a medium saucepan, stir everything together, except cornstarch and water.
  • Add cornstarch and water to the sauce. Stir.
  • Pour sauce into the pan with the noodles and chicken.
  • Toss everything together and let cook for 3-4 minutes.
