Key Ingredients

You’ll find the full list of ingredients and their exact amounts in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

A rustic wood surface with all the ingredients placed on it to make pumpkin spice French toast.
  • Texas Toast: The hearty base of the French toast, with thick slices that soak up all the pumpkin-spiced egg mixture while staying soft in the middle.
  • Pumpkin puree: Adds cozy pumpkin flavor and makes the French toast extra rich and tender.
  • Pumpkin pie spice & cinnamon: Bring all those warm, cozy fall flavors that make this French toast taste like autumn.
  • Vanilla extract: Adds a warm, sweet flavor that ties the pumpkin and spices together.

Variations

  • Use brioche: Brioche makes an especially rich and tender French toast if you want to switch up the bread.
  • Try challah: Thick slices of challah also work beautifully with the pumpkin-spiced mixture.
  • Add chopped pecans: Sprinkle chopped pecans over the finished French toast for some crunch.
  • Add powdered sugar: A light dusting of powdered sugar makes an easy finishing touch.
  • Top with whipped cream: Add a little whipped cream for an extra-indulgent breakfast.
  • Add more cinnamon: If you’re a big cinnamon fan, sprinkle a little extra over the finished French toast.
  • Use maple syrup: A generous drizzle of maple syrup pairs perfectly with the pumpkin spice flavors.
  • Add cinnamon honey butter: Don’t skip this if you have some on hand. It melts beautifully over the warm toast.

How to Make Pumpkin Spice French Toast

1: Whisk the pumpkin spice egg ingredients in a shallow bowl.

2: Dip a slice of Texas toast into the egg mixture, allowing it to get fully coated and soak up a little of the egg.

3: Cook in butter over medium heat until golden on both sides and cooked through.

4: Serve with cinnamon honey butter and maple syrup.

Expert Tips

  • Use thick bread: Texas toast works especially well because the slices are thick enough to absorb the egg mixture without becoming too fragile.
  • Use a shallow bowl: It makes dipping the bread much easier and helps you coat both sides evenly.
  • Whisk the mixture well: Make sure the pumpkin puree, eggs, cream, and spices are fully incorporated.
  • Don’t soak the bread too long: You want the Texas toast coated and flavorful without making it too difficult to transfer to the pan.
  • Keep the heat at medium: Cooking over medium heat gives the French toast enough time to cook through while allowing the outside to brown.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan: Give each slice enough room to cook evenly.
  • Use butter between batches: Add more of the divided butter to the pan as needed to keep the toast cooking in a buttery surface.
  • Watch the edges: The toast should be golden brown and the egg mixture should be cooked before you flip it.

Pumpkin Spice French Toast FAQs

Can I use a different type of bread?

Yes. While Texas toast is used in this recipe, thick slices of brioche or challah can also work well.

How do I know when the French toast is done?

Cook each side for about 2-3 minutes, or until the egg mixture is cooked and the toast is nicely browned.

Why is my French toast soggy?

The bread may have absorbed too much of the egg mixture, or the pan may not have been hot enough. Dip the bread until it’s coated and cook it over medium heat until the center is cooked through.

How long does pumpkin spice French toast last?

Refrigerate your French toast for up to 4 days in an airtight container.

Can I freeze pumpkin spice French toast?

Yes. Once cooled, the cooked French toast can be frozen and reheated when you’re ready for another breakfast.

How do I reheat pumpkin spice French toast?

Bake the slices for 6 to 8 minutes at 350°F, flipping halfway through, until crisp. You can also reheat the slices in a small amount of butter in a skillet until crisp. Microwaving also works, but the toast will be softer.
