These M&M sugar cookies are soft, thick, and chewy, loaded with mini M&Ms, and baked to perfection. The perfect sugar cookie recipe is always a hit and a delicious cookie recipe for cookie exchange parties, potlucks or to fill the cookie jar with.

Sugar cookies are one the most classic cookie recipes out there. In fact, I’d rank them right up there with chocolate chip cookies. I can’t think of anyone who hasn’t had homemade sugar cookies made by someone in their family, and I can’t think of anyone who didn’t love them. It seems like every family has a sugar cookie baker. I think it’s because they’re so easy to make and so tasty. Sugar cookies are a nothing fancy cookie variety that delivers delicious flavor with simple ingredients, so of course, they’re popular. That’s what I think, anyway.

I’ve been making sugar cookies for years. They were one of the first cookie recipes I ever learned to make, in fact. Over the years, I’ve made them in all sorts of ways. Frosted, thin and crispy, thick and chewy – you name it, I’ve made them. One of my favorite recipes is this one for sugar cookies loaded with mini M&Ms. Those sweet, buttery cookies combined with the classic chocolate candy makes a great combination that’s easy and festive enough for any occasion from afternoon snacks to potlucks and even birthday or holiday parties.

M&M Sugar Cookies

This M&M sugar cookie recipe is super easy and super tasty – the perfect combo. It starts with a classic sugar cookie dough recipe. This particular dough is made to bake up thick, soft, and chewy. Then, I add mini M&Ms to the dough for extra sweetness and chocolaty goodness. What I end up with is a chewy, soft sugar cookie loaded with chocolate goodness. It’s a simple classic that I can make in no time at all, which makes it the perfect sweet snack for a weeknight dessert, after-school snack, or a welcome addition to any gathering. After all, everybody loves sugar cookies!

Why You’ll Love These Sugar Cookies with M&Ms

  • They’re soft and chewy and always a favorite sugar cookie recipe.
  • They’re easy to make and only take a few simple ingredients.
  • Everyone loves a soft cookie recipe loaded with M&Ms!

M&M Sugar Cookies Tips and Variations

These cookies are incredibly easy to make, but I still have a few tips here to help you make them the best that they can possibly be. These are easy tips, but they make a big difference. I also have some variations that I think you’ll enjoy as well.

Tips

  • Be sure your butter is fully softened for easy creaming. This is a vital part of any cookie dough.
  • Let your egg come to room temperature before mixing it into the dough. This helps keep the cookies tender and soft.
  • These cookies don’t spread very much, so be sure you press down the dough balls before baking to ensure a uniform shape and even baking.

Variations

  • Omit the M&Ms for a classic, chewy sugar cookie.
  • Add maple extract for a delicious twist.
  • Use your favorite mix-ins like chocolate chips, chocolate chunks, butterscotch, or any other baking chip.

M&M Sugar Cookies FAQ

If you have questions about this recipe, the answers are here. The following FAQ answers the most commonly asked questions about M&M sugar cookies.

Should sugar cookies be soft or crispy?

That’s a matter of personal preference. There are both soft and crispy sugar cookie recipes, and they’re all delicious.

Why did my cookies come out flat?

Flat cookies are often the result of butter that’s too soft or melted or when not enough flour was used in the recipe. Butter for cookies should be softened to room temperature, never microwaved or melted.

How many M&M flavors are there?

There are currently 12 varieties of M&Ms.;

  • Milk Chocolate
  • Peanut
  • Peanut Butter
  • Fudge Brownie
  • Pretzel
  • Caramel
  • Crispy
  • Almond
  • Dark Chocolate
  • Mint
  • Crunchy Cookie
  • Peanut Mix

Do you have to chill M&M cookie dough before baking?

Cookie dough is chilled to control spread. The fat in the cookie dough takes longer to melt than room temperature fat, which causes less spread. While this is great for some doughs that are thinner, most sugar cookie dough is thick, so there’s no need to chill it.

Can you freeze sugar cookies?

Absolutely. Sugar cookies freeze very well. They’ll last in the freezer for up to 6 months in an air-tight, freezer-safe container or heavy-duty freezer bag.

How to Store M&M Sugar Cookies

Store your cookies in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to two weeks. Be aware, however, that they taste the best in the first week. For longer storage, place them in an airtight, freezer-safe container or heavy-duty freezer bag for up to 6 months.

How to Make M&M Sugar Cookies

Making these cookies is as simple a matter as raiding your pantry and doing a little mixing. It really is just that easy.

Step 1: Prep

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Get out your egg and butter and bring them to room temperature.

Step 2: Combine the Wet Ingredients

Using an electric mixer, cream the butter and sugar together in a large bowl until creamy – about 3 minutes. Then, beat the egg, vanilla, and corn syrup into the mixture until combined.

Step 3: Combine the Dry Ingredients

Whisk the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt together in a medium bowl.

Step 4: Make the Dough

Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix. Then, fold the mini M&Ms into the dough.

Step 5: Bake

Using a 1 1/2-inch cookie scoop, place rounded cookie dough balls onto the prepared baking sheet. Then, gently press each cookie down and add a few more mini M&Ms to the tops of each cookie and sprinkle with coarse sugar. Bake for 10 to 11 minutes.

Step 6: Cool

Remove the cookies and let them cool on the cookie sheet for a couple of minutes. Then, transfer them to a cooling rack to cool completely.
