I love homemade chicken and dumplings. I mean, I really love it. When I was a kid, my grandmother made chicken and dumplings from scratch, and I couldn’t get enough of it. The dumplings where so tender, the chicken just fell apart, and the creamy base was the perfect vehicle to carry all the flavors. Unfortunately, all that delicious flavor took a ton of time. That’s why I came up with this semi-homemade version that gives me all the flavors and feels that I got from my grandmother’s recipe but in a fraction of the time. It’s a great way to get a rustic meal on the table in relatively little time, which makes it perfect for both weekends and weeknights.

Creamy Chicken and Dumplings

This recipe is a family favorite that I’ve been making for quite a long time. Using ingredients that help me cut down on time and effort, I’ve transformed classic chicken and dumplings into a recipe that’s easy enough for weeknights but still keeps all the rustic flavor that makes this recipe so great.

Chicken breasts combined with cream of chicken soup, onions, bold seasonings, heavy cream and broth, to make the creamy base. Then, I use refrigerated biscuits for the dumplings. They provide a great flavor and texture and are an excellent alternative to homemade dumplings. When it all comes together, you get a rich, creamy chicken and dumplings recipe that has everything we love about the classic with far less work. That’s always a winning combo.

  • You can make it with leftover chicken, or rotisserie chicken so it’s even easier!

How to Make Creamy Chicken and Dumplings

This is one of the easiest – if not THE easiest – chicken and dumplings recipes you’ll ever make. It comes together in just a few easy steps.

Step 1: Cook the Chicken

Add oil and butter to a large frying pan or electric skillet and heat over medium heat until melted. Then, add the chicken and onion to the pan and sprinkle with seasonings. Cook the chicken until it’s no longer pink and the onions are tender.

Step 2: Cook the Soup

Add the soup, chicken broth, and heavy cream to the chicken mixture, stir and then add in vegetables. Cook until the sauce is hot and bubbly.

Step 3: Add the Biscuits

Add the biscuits to the pan, cover, and reduce the heat, simmering until the biscuits are cooked through. Salt and pepper, to taste. Enjoy!

*If the chicken and dumplings aren’t thick enough, add a slurry of cornstarch and water to thicken it up.

Creamy Chicken and Dumplings Tips and Variations

This recipe is so easy to make that you’ll be surprised at how fast it comes together. That being said, there are a few things to remember to make it the best it can possibly be. I also have some fun variations here, as well.

Tips

  • Cook the chicken until it’s just cooked. It will continue to cook when you simmer the chicken and dumplings.
  • Add a cornstarch slurry if your soup isn’t thick enough.

Variations

  • Use refrigerated crescent roll dough in place of canned biscuits.
  • Make your own biscuit and dough and drop it into the chicken soup.
  • Use your favorite variety of canned biscuits, from Grands to buttermilk. They all work.

This recipe is loaded with flavors that pair well with a lot of different foods, so you can really go wrong. Some of my favorites are:

  • Cornbread
  • Salad
  • Green beans
  • Fried okra
  • Grape salad
  • Fruit salad
  • Fried apples
  • Corn pudding
  • Crusty bread
  • Mixed vegetables

Creamy Chicken and Dumplings FAQ

If you have questions about this recipe, then read on. The following FAQ answers the most commonly asked questions about chicken and dumplings.

Where do chicken and dumplings come from?

There are conflicting accounts of where chicken and dumplings originated. Some say that the dish originated in the southern US during the antebellum era, which makes sense because the recipe is such a southern staple. However, other sources say it was created in Quebec during the Great Depression.

What can I add to chicken and dumplings to make it thicker?

If your soup isn’t as thick as you’d like, make a slurry of cornstarch and water and add it to the soup to thicken it up.

Is chicken and dumplings supposed to be thick or soupy?

Traditionally, it’s a thick, creamy chicken soup. However, many people make it more like traditional chicken soup and simply add dumpling dough.

What kind of chicken is best for chicken and dumplings?

That’s largely a matter of preference. I prefer chicken breasts, but I know people who make it by stewing an entire chicken and shredding up both the white and dark meat.

What can I use instead of canned biscuits for chicken and dumplings.

You can use homemade dumpling or biscuit dough or refrigerated crescent roll dough.

Can you freeze chicken and dumplings?

Absolutely. It freezes very well and will last for up to 6 months.

How to Store and Reheat Leftover Creamy Chicken and Dumplings

Store leftovers for up to 3 days in an airtight container in the refrigerator. For longer storage, freeze it in an airtight, freezer-safe container for up to 6 months.

To reheat the soup, simply place it in a saucepan and heat it over medium-low heat until heated through.
