This Berry Fruit Salad is light, refreshing, and a favorite summer dessert recipe that is loaded with fresh strawberries, fresh blackberries, and fresh raspberries. A delightful fruit salad that is perfect for backyard BBQs, summer cookouts, potlucks and family gatherings. Also, delicious as an afternoon snack the whole family will enjoy.

When summer rolls around, I like to bring cool, creamy desserts to potlucks or serve them as desserts. There’s nothing more refreshing on a hot day than a sweet treat that’s chilled, rich, creamy, and delicious. When I was a girl, my mother used to make fruit salad all the time. I couldn’t get enough of it, and neither could anyone else when she brought it to any gathering. I loved helping her make it, and when I got older, I made it all the time, as well. Not only was it delicious, but it was so much fun to get the kids in the kitchen to help me just like I helped my mom.

That’s why I love making this fruit salad. It’s full of flavor and nostalgia. It also has all the classic flavors we love in fruit salad with a healthy serving of berries inside of it! It’s the perfect dessert to bring to backyard barbecues, potlucks, parties, or simply to serve to your family for dessert on a summer day.

This fruit salad is a berry lover’s dream. It’s loaded with strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries. It also has an extra kick of sweetness from mini marshmallows, the earthy flavor and crunch of chopped pecans, and the smooth, creamy, sweetness of Cool Whip. Oh, it’s so good. Bring it to any get-together and watch everyone devour it in minutes!

Variations

This recipe is so easy that I don’t have any tips whatsoever. I’m pretty sure it’s physically impossible to ruin this recipe, which is always a plus. I do, however, have some great variations that I think you’re going to love.

  • Use any of your favorite fruits like blueberries, pineapple, grapes, apples, watermelon, bananas, and more.
  • For an extra kick of protein with relatively no flavor change, use full-fat Greek yogurt in place of sour cream.
  • If you’re feeling fancy, make your own whipped cream for this recipe.

Berry Fruit Salad FAQ

If you have questions bout this recipe, then you’re in luck. The following FAQ answers the most commonly asked questions about fruit salad.

What is fruit salad?

Fruit salad is a dessert made with various fruit and served in a liquid of either fruit juice or syrup. The Cool Whip-based version is made with Cool Whip or whipped cream, sour cream, and sugar. It’s what most people know as ambrosia.

What is berry salad?

Berry salad is simply a variation of fruit salad that uses berries exclusively.

How do I keep fruit salad fresh?

It’s very easy to keep fruit salad like this fresh. Simply store it in an air-tight container. If you’re adding fruit that can turn brown like apples or bananas, give them a quick toss in a little lemon juice (not too much) to prevent browning.

What fruit is good for fruit salad?

There are all kinds of fruits that go well in fruit salad. Some favorites are:

  • Berries
  • Pineapple
  • Apple
  • Banana
  • Mandarin oranges
  • Kiwi
  • Grapes
  • Melon

Can you use bananas in fruit salad?

You sure can. They’re very good. If you use bananas or apples, be sure to coat them in lemon juice first to stop them from turning brown.

Can I use frozen berries in fruit salad?

I don’t recommend it. Frozen berries release a lot of water and get mushy when they defrost, leading to a fruit salad that tends to be watery and fruit that is mushy rather than firm.

Can fruit salad be made in advance?

It sure can. Fruit salad is delicious the next day, maybe even better. Make a batch the night before and then bring it to your party or serve it as a dessert the next day.

How to Store Leftovers

Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days.
