Frosted Molasses Cookies
The molasses cookies have been a very popular recipe on the blog and I thought, Why not frost them and they will be even better! So here they are, soft, chewy cookies frosted with a delicious molasses frosting.
Old Fashioned Molasses Cookies
Actually these make me think of the holidays. I always bake these cookies every year during Christmas. Last year I made a ton of cookies to share with all the new neighbors in our new housing tract. Those cookies were definitely a favorite and they have always reminded me of old fashioned molasses cookies I had as a kid.
How To Make Molasses Cookies
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the sugar, butter and molasses together.
- Add an egg and beat until light and fluffy.
- Mix in the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, ginger, cloves and nutmeg together until well combined.
- Cover the dough and refrigerate for about an hour. This makes handling the dough much easier.
- Roll dough into 1 – 1 1/2 in balls.
- Roll each ball in sugar to coat.
- Place on an ungreased cookie sheet, 2 inches apart.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes.

Soft Molasses Cookies with Molasses Frosting
Ingredients
For The Molasses Cookies
- 1 cup sugar
- 3/4 cup butter, softened
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 1 egg
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp ginger
- 1/2 tsp cloves
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- Optional: sugar for coating
For The Molasses Frosting
- 4 oz cream cheese, room temperature
- 1/4 cup butter, softened
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 1 Tbsp + 1 tsp molasses
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°
For The Molasses Cookies
- In a large mixing bowl, beat sugar, butter and molasses together.
- Beat in egg until light and fluffy.
- Mix in flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, ginger, cloves and nutmeg together until well combined.
- Cover dough and refrigerate for about an hour. This makes handling the dough much easier.
- Roll dough into 1 - 1 1/2 in balls.Roll each ball in sugar to coat.
- Place on ungreased cookie sheet, 2 inches apart.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes.
- Remove from oven and let sit for 1 minute before removing cookies and placing on wire rack to cool.
- Makes about 3 dozen cookies.
For The Molasses Frosting
- In a medium mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and butter together until creamy.
- Add vanilla and molasses, mix well.
- Slowly add powdered sugar and beat until creamy.
- Frost cookies once they have cooled..
- Garnish with gold sprinkles, optional
